Antelope canyon is a so-called slot canyon, i.e. a canyon that is significantly deeper than it is wide. Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, mostly due to flash flooding. Rainwater runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways.
Access to the canyon is restricted to guided tours, which tend to be rather crowded. Nonetheless, the views are stunning and with a little patience one can avoid taking photos with tourists - even though for some people photos showing themselves seem to be the only reason to visit this marvelous canyon...
