Natural History Photographs

Index

The index files below provide a systematically organized overview of the taxa represented on this site. The overview is based on phylogenetic principles, although I sometimes compromise between phylogenetic rigor and usability. In my notes On taxonomy, I briefly reflect on this trade-off. These notes also refer to the taxonomic resources that undergird the index files.

The numbers in parentheses in the index files below indicate the number of species of the pertinent taxon illustrated on this site. Species names in brown color refer to photos made in Australia. Species names in green color refer to photos of "extended phenotypes," mines and galls; more often than not, the insect itself doesn't show on the photo (e.g., species of the fly family Agromyzidae).
