This species, an endemic of the Rhodopen mountains, is a relict of the Tertiary period. It survived the ice ages in a few sheltered places, being able to go into a state of anabiosis during periods with unfavorable conditions (the English name refers to this capacity). The plants shown in the bottom row seem to be well on their way into this state, which here is related to the lack of water.
