The Midway Geyser Basin is home to one of the absolute highlights of Yellowstone, the Grand Prismatic Spring. One can walk a boardwalk along the edge of the spring; or one can walk up a ramp and then view the spring from above. We did both, and we found both options equally rewarding. On the 16th of August, after the passage of a weather front on the 14th, the sky was still adorned with friendly white clouds. Toward the solar eclipse on the 21st, clouds gradually disappeared which made the landscape slightly less impressive; so we were happy to have the friendly clouds at the start of our week in Yellowstone.

Even if the Grand Prismatic Spring is perhaps the absolute highlight, the Midway Geyser Basin also features the former Excelsior Geyser - now a hot spring - and various smaller but lovely blue hot springs.
