Natural History Photographs

The terrain’s special morphology and the various streams and rivers throughout the region led to the construction of various stone-paved paths and bridges that served in the communication and transportation between the settlements. All of the bridges were constructed during 18th and 19th century, and some 80 have survived till today. The bridges are not suited for modern traffic, so where modern roads meet old bridges, a new bridge is built next to the old one - which is still preserved as a monument.

The Plaka bridge was constructed in 1866, and collapsed in 2015 due to a flash flood. Rebuilding the bridge was completed in 2020, the year we visited it. While the desire to rebuild this iconic monument is understandable, the replica doesn't do full justice to the original, and I was quite disappointed with the result - reason for showing only a few photos.
