| The small town of Megalochori is at the foot of the Olymbos mountains, and because of the warmer climate spring had advanced here compared with the Olymbos massif. Nonetheless, early in the week temperatures were fairly low, which worked in my favor with one particular butterfly, the False Apollo (Archon apollinus). This butterfly has a tendency to fly, and fly, and fly - so taking decent photos of them is quite an ordeal. I had seen the Falso Apollo already two times in Türkiye, without a chance of a reasonable photo; but due to the relative low temperatures today I got a few chances. Another nice find was Reinhold's orchid, a beautiful Orphys species I also had found before in Türkiye, but was happy to see again. To top it off, we found the endemic Lesbos Fritillary. |
