| We arrived with a stormy wind blowing from the north, and the wind was still blowing pretty strong during our first day at Lesbos. My hope was that the wind would be less strong in the field, protected by mountains and vegetation. Indeed the weather turned out to be fairly workable, despite the fact we visited a site close to the northern shores of the island. On the first day, we visited an area advertised for its orchids (being an island of limestone in a sea of volcanic rocks), among others the rare and "endemic" Lesbos orchid (its endemicity depends on whether you recognize it as a species - which in my opinion is doubtful). Sadly, we failed to find it. But we found another highlight, the Monkey orchid, Orchis simia, in some numbers, as well as a few other beautiful orchids. At the end of the day, the glass was half full - or was it half empty? |
