Meteora
8 July 2017

First stay overnight was at Kastraki, a local town in the lanscape of Meteora. The area is renowned for its rock formations, on top of which one find various monasteries. The rock columns are composed of a mixture of sandstone and conglomerate. Meteora's landscape is special because of the uniformity of the sediments deposited over millions of years with few signs of vertical layering, and also because the localised abrupt vertical weathering. Early in the morning, the rock columns cast long shadows, and it takes a while before these retract. As a result, one can find sleeping insects till some time into the morning, which is quite handy for photography.
